Turn on microphone - Android phone + Chrome
For most people, Joy Notes will pop up a little box asking to use your microphone when you need it. If you tap Allow, it should work right away. But sometimes, Chrome or your phone might block the microphone, and we need to fix that. We can’t change these settings for you, but we’ll guide you through it step-by-step.
Joy Notes works best in Chrome, so make sure you’re using the Chrome app on your Android phone or tablet. Let’s get started!
Open the Chrome app on your Android device (it’s the round icon with red, green, and yellow colors).
Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the screen to open a menu.
In the menu, scroll down and tap Settings. It’s usually near the bottom.
On the Settings page, look for Site settings and tap it. This controls what websites (like Joy Notes) can do.
Tap Microphone to see the microphone options.
Make sure the Microphone switch is turned on (it should be blue or slid to the right). If it’s off (gray or slid left), tap it to turn it on.
If Joy Notes still doesn’t work, go back to the Joy Notes page in Chrome. When it asks for microphone access, tap Allow instead of Block.
Done? Go back to Joy Notes and refresh the page (pull down on the screen with your finger, or tap the circle-arrow button near the top).
If you've got the correct setting but it's still not working, here are a couple of more tips:
Check that you don't have headphones or another mic connected. That's happened a bunch of times when somebody has headphones connected but not wearing them so the sound is not picked up.
Try the old trick of logging out and in again, or switch the browser down and open again. Computers are computers, sometimes they randomly don't want to work and then next time they do!
If the settings look right but Joy Notes can’t hear you, here are some things to check:
Unplug headphones or earbuds: If you’ve got earbuds plugged in but aren’t using them, the microphone might be trying to listen through those. Unplug them and try again.
Close and reopen Chrome: Swipe Chrome away from your recent apps (swipe up or sideways, depending on your phone), then open it again. Phones can act funny sometimes, and this might fix it.
Check your phone’s microphone settings:
Open your phone’s Settings app (usually a gear icon).
Look for Apps or Apps & notifications, then tap Chrome.
Tap Permissions, then Microphone, and make sure it’s set to Allow.
Don’t worry—one of these should get your microphone working with Joy Notes!
